The client is a recognized beer producer in Latvia. With increasing demand and a long-term beer brewing tradition, the company built a new brewery in 2000 in Cesis, Latvia. Investing in a modern production site, Biothane provided a Biobed® Package Plant that permits discharging the brewery's wastewater into the city sewer.

Treatment Process
After removal of yeast, grains and kieselguhr inside the brewery, the wastewater is collected in a buffer tank. The wastewater is then fed into a conditioning tank where steam injection heats up the wastewater to 32°C and caustic dosing regulates the pH-value to achieve optimal circumstances for anaerobic treatment.
Anaerobic treatment takes place in four Biobed® EGSB package units, all connected to a single conditioning tank. Anaerobic bacteria convert the COD in the wastewater into biogas, with a TCOD removal efficiency of 80%. The produced biogas is reused in the brewery's steam boilers. A short flash aeration facility prevents odor nuisance from the anaerobic effluent.
