Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies secured a contract for the design and construction to provide a process water plant and a wastewater treatment plant for the Alexandria Sugar Company in Egypt.

Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies, received an order, thanks to its subsidiaries VWS Egypt, VWS Belgium and Biothane, to design and supply for both the process water and the wastewater treatment plant of the new sugar beet processing and refining of Alexandria Sugar Company (ASC), for its upcoming sugar beet processing and refining factory. The ASC facility is located at Nubariya, 200km NW of Cairo, on the edge of the Western Desert. The plants are to be commissioned early 2012, to be online for next year's beet sugar campaign.

The process water plant, with a capacity of 200 m3/h, comprises of a multimedia filter designed to handle the high total suspended solids loading in the raw water, and is followed by an ion exchange softening. The next step is a high recovery brackish water reverse osmosis systems are used to remove the majority of dissolved salts and organics, which has a low chemical requirement. For the subsequent demineralisation, which ensures the final water quality, VWS' fully automatic, packaged Rapide-Strata™ Deionisers will be used. These Rapide-Strata™ units employ Short Cycle Ion Exchange (SCION) technology, which, compared to conventional demineralisation systems,use30% less acid & caustic regenerant. They also produce significantly lower discharge volumes and a pH neutral wastewater on regeneration, hence no pH correction required prior to discharge.

The wastewater plant will treat 600 m3/h of highly polluted wastewater. The pretreatment step will comprise silt and clay separation, clarification and heat recovery. Biothane's Biobed® EGSB (Expanded Granular Sludge Blanket) anaerobic reactor technology is used to digest the majority of the COD. Additional carbon removal is achieved by polishing, using a conventional activated sludge process, including denitrification, and final chlorination.

In order to minimise the carbon footprint and increase the overall efficiency of the plant, the produced biogas from the Biobed® reactors is dried and used in the boiler.
